Fortnox is Sweden's most common accounting software, and for a small web shop it is often the right choice: Fortnox's own connection to Shopify books sales, returns and payouts automatically, Fortnox Lager (Inventory) keeps the stock balance, and it costs a few hundred kronor a month. This guide describes what Fortnox does for an online store, what the connections require, and the signs that usually show a store has outgrown it. Everything about Fortnox below comes from Fortnox's own pages and help center, with dates. The general comparison is in Visma Net vs Fortnox: have you outgrown Fortnox?; this one is about the web shop.
Short answer: is Fortnox enough for our online store?
- you have one store, your own warehouse and sell in Swedish kronor
- booking sales as daily totals is enough
- few people need to approve
- and your auditor is happy with summary entries and Shopify's reports as documentation
- you want every order in the receivables ledger and the payouts from Klarna and Shopify Payments reconciled order by order
- you sell to resellers with their own prices, terms and credit limits
- you have 3PL, several companies or several currencies
- or many people need to work and approve in the system and the license is counted per person
Fortnox books that the day added up. A growing online store needs to know that every order added up.
What Fortnox's own Shopify connection does
In spring 2026 Fortnox relaunched its own connections to Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe as Fortnox Kopplingar, with "automatic booking of sales, returns and payouts". The Shopify connection books, in Fortnox's own words, "sales, returns and payouts from Shopify and Shopify Payments including OSS", and can fetch historical data when activated. It handles VAT for EU sales above the OSS threshold, Norway and the United Kingdom. It requires Fortnox Bokföring (Accounting) and "your payout currency in SEK". The price follows the number of transactions per month:
SEK 0 a month
SEK 295
SEK 495
SEK 895
SEK 1,095
What the connection does is bookkeeping. "A journal entry is created daily in Fortnox", Fortnox writes in its help center: the day's sales, returns and payouts as one summary entry. Orders, items and stock are not transferred; the page does not mention them. For orders, items and inventory in Fortnox you need a hub from another vendor in Fortnox's catalog, and then you also need Fortnox Fakturering (Invoicing) with Order.
Daily totals or order by order
This is the most important difference to understand before you choose. With Fortnox's own connection, sales exist in the books as the day's total, with Shopify's reports as documentation. That is enough for a store selling to consumers in Sweden that wants VAT and revenue to add up. It is not enough when you want every order in the receivables ledger with its invoice, when a reseller needs an invoice for its order, or when Klarna's payout should be matched to exactly the orders it paid for.
Klarna is not handled by Fortnox's own connection at all. There are connectors from other vendors in Fortnox's catalog that sync the payouts and book the fees, with their own monthly cost on top of Fortnox. They too book the payout as one combined event. If you want every line in Klarna's settlement matched to the order, with the fee and VAT separately and an approval before the entry is posted, that is a different setup, and it applies to Svea, Walley and Swedbank Pay as much as to Klarna. How we do it in Visma Net is in Booking Klarna and Shopify payouts in Visma Net.
Fortnox Lager
Fortnox Lager costs SEK 369 a month for the first user and SEK 75 for each additional one, according to the price list. It has several warehouse locations, batch handling, production orders with bills of material, dropshipping, reservation on customer orders, partial delivery, and maximum stock and reorder point per item and location. Inventory is always valued at FIFO. The purchase proposal calculates on maximum stock, minimum order quantity, stock balance and backorders. Stocktaking takes at most 5,000 items at a time, and a second count is created for the rest.
It is real inventory support for a store that packs itself. What usually starts to chafe as the store grows is not the inventory module itself, but how it connects to the store, the payments and a warehouse run by someone else.
Seven signs an online store has outgrown Fortnox
The receivables ledger should hold one invoice per order, also for consumers, so that the return, the payment and the shipment hang on the order. Fortnox's own connection books daily totals.
Payouts from Klarna, Svea, Swedbank Pay and Shopify Payments should be matched order by order, with the fee and VAT separately, and approved before posting. In Fortnox the payout is booked as one combined event.
Price lists exist in Fortnox, and the credit limit warns when a customer exceeds it. In Visma Net the customer has a customer class with price list, payment terms and VAT zone, and the credit hold stops the next order until someone releases it.
With a 3PL warehouse the order should go from the store, through the ERP, to the warehouse, and the shipment and stock back. With Fortnox's own Shopify connection the order never enters Fortnox, so the flow is built from third-party connectors at both ends. In Visma Net the order is the sales order, and Ongoing WMS and other warehouses connect to it.
Fortnox books in foreign currency, but currency accounts cannot be reconciled in its reconciliation views, Fortnox Finans services only take Swedish kronor, and the Shopify connection requires payouts in SEK. In Visma Net the next currency, the next company and the next country are settings in the same system.
Fortnox reports on account, cost center and project. Margin per channel, collection and market requires the Rapport & Analys add-on or Excel. In Visma Net the dimension code is set on every line, with several segments, and the report just asks.
Accounting SEK 189, Invoicing SEK 149 and Supplier Invoice Approval SEK 59 a month per user, plus the Fortnox Access base fee. The person who packs, the one who approves the freight invoice and the one who follows up each become a license. Visma Net has unlimited users.
Prices are Fortnox list prices on a twelve-month agreement, checked October 10, 2026. Fortnox adjusts its packages, so check the current price list.

What Fortnox does well
Fortnox is inexpensive, simple and familiar to almost every auditor and accounting firm in Sweden. The bank connections are free, Fortnox Finans handles distribution, reminders and collections, and its catalog of connectors is the largest in the country. For a store with one warehouse, sales in kronor to consumers and a handful of people in the system, Fortnox is often the right choice, and then you should not switch. Our experience is that it starts to chafe at roughly the point where the store gets resellers, a second warehouse or a second market, and where the finance team starts spending a day a month making Klarna's payouts add up in a spreadsheet.
How the switch works
The chart of accounts, customers, vendors and items are exported from Fortnox and converted through our own conversion, Straviont Cloud Bridge; open items and opening balances are entered as of the start date. The web shop is connected to Visma Net and tested with real orders before go-live. The whole switch, including the notice period and the archive in Fortnox, is in Switching from Fortnox to Visma Net, and what everyday work looks like step by step on From Fortnox to Visma Net (in Swedish).
Frequently asked questions
Does Fortnox work with Shopify?
Yes. Fortnox has its own connection that automatically books sales, returns and payouts from Shopify and Shopify Payments, including OSS. It requires Fortnox Bokföring and payouts in Swedish kronor. Orders, items and stock are not transferred by Fortnox's own connection.
What does Fortnox's Shopify connection cost?
The price follows the number of transactions per month: SEK 0 up to 10, SEK 295 up to 100, SEK 495 up to 1,000, SEK 895 up to 5,000 and SEK 1,095 above that, according to fortnox.se in October 2026. Third-party connectors, for orders and inventory, cost extra with their own monthly fees, and payment service integration, such as Klarna, with matching and handling of payouts is not part of the accounting software. In Click to Cash the connectors to Shopify, inventory and payment services, with matching of payouts, are fully included in the fixed price, with no fee per connector.
Does Fortnox book every Shopify order?
No. Fortnox's own connection creates one summary entry per day with the day's sales, returns and payouts. If you want every order as an invoice in the receivables ledger you need Fortnox Fakturering with Order and a hub from Fortnox's catalog that brings in the orders.
How do you book Klarna in Fortnox?
Fortnox's own Shopify connection does not handle Klarna. Fortnox's catalog has connectors from other vendors that sync the payouts and book the fees. They book the payout as one combined event.
What does Fortnox Lager cost?
SEK 369 a month for the first user and SEK 75 a month for each additional user, according to Fortnox's price list on a twelve-month agreement, checked October 10, 2026.
How many warehouses can you have in Fortnox?
Fortnox Lager has several warehouse locations, with maximum stock and reorder point per item and location. Inventory is always valued at FIFO, and stocktaking takes at most 5,000 items per count.
Does Fortnox Lager work with Shopify?
Not through Fortnox's own Shopify connection, which only does bookkeeping. Stock and orders between Shopify and Fortnox Lager go through a third-party hub from Fortnox's catalog.
Can Fortnox handle resellers?
Fortnox has price lists per customer and warns when a customer exceeds its credit limit. Terms per customer class, a credit hold that stops the order and a portal where the reseller sees its invoices and balance are things we set up in Visma Net.
When has an online store outgrown Fortnox?
When the order should go into the receivables ledger instead of a daily total, when Klarna's payouts should be reconciled order by order, when resellers, 3PL, several companies or several currencies come in, or when many people need to work and approve and the license is counted per person.
What does it cost to switch from Fortnox to Visma Net?
The Visma Net license is signed with Visma from SEK 2,744 a month plus transaction volume, with unlimited users. Our e-commerce implementation, Click to Cash, costs SEK 95,000 at a fixed price including the integration with the web shop, inventory and payouts, or SEK 135,000 if we also build the Shopify store. Conversion of master data is included.
How long does the switch take?
Click to Cash takes one to two months from workshop to go-live. Master data is converted first, and you test on your own data while we configure. The standard setup Visma Net Core, without a web shop, takes from four weeks.
What happens to the history in Fortnox?
The chart of accounts, master data, open items and opening balances come along to Visma Net. How much history is converted is decided in the workshop; the rest stays in Fortnox's archive on their terms, as described in the switching guide.
